Louis Neefs revived in bronze

The sun was high and the sky was blue in Gierle.
Louis Neefs, who was killed in an accident in 1980, would have been 70 years old in 2007. To mark the occasion a magnificent bronze statue was unveiled in his native village Gierle (Lille). Lots of people from Gierle and from all over Belgium attended the ceremonial unveiling of the monument. All participants agreed on the masterful impact of this statue, created by Willy Peeters.

Bronze

The idea to honour the famous descendant of Gierle with a statue had already emerged several times. The municipality of Gierle commissioned the artist Willy Peeters, living in Heverlee but native of Gierle, to create the bronze artwork. In close consultation with Louis’ sister Connie Neefs, the artist managed to achieve a portrait with a remarkably good likeness and to create a powerful image.

Inaugurated on Sunday, August 5, 2007.
